Prof. Urassa is a Public Health Physician and an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health. Currently he is also the Dean, School of Public Health and Social Sciences, MUHAS. Prior to this position he was an Associate Dean in the same School and also the acting Head, Department of Community Health. As an associate Dean he concentrated in managing academic matters including facilitation of development of School curricula for different undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Dr David believes on the need of a critical mass of Public Health professionals before a significant impact on health improvement is felt to the population, hence continuously supporting establishment of alternative training options like evening and Distance learning public Health programs. He was from the beginning involved in implementation of CDC-SPHSS –BU-DARTMOUTH Capacity Building project that has transformed and strengthened the School capacity in training and developing Competency based Syllabi for different programs. As a Dean he is also a member of Several networks of African Public health School including One Health Central and East Africa (OHCEA), Health Alliance, African disaster Resilience Africa, and individually a member of Afya Bora Consortium working group to mention a few..He has more than 20 years of experience in teaching and supervising Undergraduate and postgraduate University programs, in research projects and dissertations.
Prof. Urassa has served as PI and Co-Investigator in several research and Evaluation projects including UNICEF- Violence against Children in Tanzania, MUHAS- John Hopkins – M&E for Maternal health Program in Morogoro as well as a Consultancy services for UNFPA, GIZ, MOHSW,etc. He has authored and Co-authored several research publications in peer reviewed journals in PubMed and other local journals. His experience includes teaching, Quality improvement, Non-communicable diseases, quality aspect of maternal & newborn child health, program planning, monitoring and evaluation as well as management, leadership and governance. Dr. Urassa holds a degree in Doctor of Medicine, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Public Health and Medicine respectively.
